Remembering
Classmates Who Left
Updates from the Class - Rev 11/14/2021
- 10/25/2021 -
David Lister
Missing is David Leister (I may have the last
name misspelled). He was a wrestler - flunked out at the end of 1st
semester swab year. His father had fought for Israel doing the
second israeli - arab war. While defusing a land mine it blew taking
away both of his hands. He picked David and myself up to drive us to
Long Island for Thanksgiving. I am still in awe of how he was able
to drive and handle everyday functions with two artificial hands. He was
a nice guy
============
- 10/25/2021 - Godon Hanson - Charlie Mapa (Charles
W. Mapa in the swearing in list of photos.) From Oxnard, CA. He was in
Terry Cross’ summer section and roomed next to me. I thought he was a
cool guy. I tried to look him up a couple times on the internet without
success.
============
- 10/25/2021- Herb Williams - ????
Shortly into Swabyear, my roommate was injured severely doing vertical
laps. That evening I was awoken and he was bleeding in his groin area. He
went out on a medical. Middle of the night and I squared corners etc
waking up the second class.Still don’t believe that. He was from Old
Saybrook but I have never remembered his name. The names on your list
didn’t jog a memory either. Anyone out there remember?
============
- 10/25/2021 - Dave Walts - Tom (?) Strittmatter
...from
Texas I believe.
============
- 10/25/2021 - Frank Kisman - Strickmeyer or Strictmitter
Believe we were the last class to get officially hazed. That was
the incident that broke the camel's back. At least that is the
scuttlebutt that I recall.
============
- 10/25/2021 - John Whitehouse - Tony Zimmer
I may have missed it, but on the list of #4 Those who left early, I
didn't see Tony Zimmer's name. You have him in deceased; however, he
left the Academy, graduated from a California school and went to OCS
several months before we graduated.
============
- 10/25/2021 - Gordon Hanson - Charlie Mapa
Here is one I don’t see on the lists: Charlie Mapa. (Charles W. Mapa
in the swearing in list of photos.) From Oxnard, CA. He was in Terry
Cross’ summer section and roomed next to me. I thought he was a cool guy.
I tried to look him up a couple times on the internet without success.
============
- 10/26/2021 - Kevin Scheid - David Cooper &
Danny Fisher
Two names I did not see on the list of classmates who left are David
Cooper and Danny Fisher. David Cooper was famous for
stuffing an entire loaf of bread in his mouth and was able to still
whistle (I think). This earned him carry-on for a day or something, but as
far as I know no one was able to beat that record. If I remember, he was
discharged with a neck injury from carrying his mattress on his head
during hazing. Danny Fisher was a wrestler, and I
believe he was state champion for Virginia. He made it through the first
year and was discharged for having Gil Barres disease before the start of
third class year. He said he was being kicked out for having Go-Bears
disease. He recently retired as a professor of environmental science at
the University of Maryland. Tom Gilmour and I had a call with him a few
months back, so Tom might have something to add.
============
- 10/26/2021 - Peter Dolan - Jerry Kosinski
I think left after 3/C year.
============
- 10/26/2021 - John Malmrose - Greg Wolf
Greg Wolf was my first wife Swab Summer. He left after a week or
so. I tried to convince him to stay. It was not for him.
============
- 10/26/2021 - Loren Marovelli - Marv left prior to 20
years service
I think U should provide for an addn'l Listing of those Commissioned
but Resigned prior to 20 years service. MARV (O-4 USCG w/ 10
yrs-2 mos Active Duty, plus 1 yr USCGR)
============
- 10/26/2021 - Tim Healey - Art Doucette
Mentioned “Al Doucette”. That was Art Doucette. Part of Thor’s Corp
Swab Summer. May have been from VA or the Carolinas. Had family in the
Boston area whom I got visit with him. Art left after swab year.
Don’t have anything further.
============
- 10/26/2021 - Mike Matune - Timothy Coon
It was Timothy Coon From Orange, NJ per this page Black
cadets at the United States Coast Guard Academy - Wikipedia . Believe
he left during Swab Summer. Section 12 is right as I was in that group
also.
============
- 10/206/2021 - Ben Abiles - Rittenhouse
I recall there was a guy named Rittenhouse in Apple's Corps (Section 5)
or Balunis' platoon. He was always tipping whatever dinghy he
was assigned so no one wanted to sail with him. He was from
Tennessee.
============
- 10/26/2021 - Loren Marovelli - William Schuman
I think Shuman, William was in my H.S. Class in 1968. As I recall, they
detected an irregularity w/ his heartbeat "murmur" and he was medically
disqualified.
============
- 10/27/2021 - Bill Bannister - Don Porth
I tracked down Don Porth. He was my roommate in section 11 for a
very short time swab summer until he left the Academy and returned to his
enlistment in the Coast Guard.
Email from Don Porth -
"I am corresponding from my gmail account today as I
only have my arplaw account on my office computer and my phone. I
happened to have been at the law firm office yesterday but today I am in
my home office. During this time of year I am generally in the firm
office one day a week. During tax season I am often there during the
whole work week. I have slowed down my practice and moved to my
ancestral home on a farm about 100 miles north of Burlington, Iowa, in
rural Calamus, Iowa. I keep an apartment next to the office in
Burlington. "You may give my email address out. I
assume as do most Coasties, I have a lifetime's worth of mostly fun
stories about the 4 years I served as an enlisted person, that I share
with anyone willing to listen. If I had been in the CG for 28 years
I am pretty sure they would have trouble shutting me up. I am fortunate to
have frequent contact with some of the men I was stationed with on the
CGC Durable on the Gulf Coast of Texas during the last 2 years of my
enlistment. When we get together (I had 2 of them on my front porch
a few weeks ago, who hadn't seen each other in decades) the
conversation is usually first trying to remember the subject person's
name, then telling the story about them."
============ - 11/04/2021 - Tom Yearout - Ed Clark
Our classmate, Ed Clark, who left before graduation,
was the victim of a hit and run while out jogging just recently. He
suffered a broken arm in two places. Surgery went well but they found
more damage than showed on the X-rays. Lots of screws, plates and what
looked like bailing wire used in the repairs. He is recovering but could
use some encouragement. His email is:
Edclark50@gmail.com.
============
- 11/14/2021 - Ben Stoppe - Joe Tamargo
Ben met Joe Tamargo at a UVA/Norte Dame
football game on 11/13/21 in Charlottesville, VA.
Joe, a former classmate, who completed two
yrs. at the Academy, before leaving for different pastures.
He was in Section 10 Swab Summer, but, couldn’t remember his PC (and it
didn’t come to him during the rest of the game). He said the reverter was
Woody Vaughn. Went on the Mackinaw Summer cruise third class year up on
the Great Lakes. I spoke about Section 1 & Terry Cross, that we both
became CG Aviators & were Engineering Officer (me) & Operations Officer at
AIRSTA Cape Cod way back when, etc. Joe returned
home to Long Island after the Academy & started a career in security.
Wife’s name Mary. He has/had a daughter at UVA. I told him about
our upcoming Academy 50th Reunion next October. Said he’d be welcome to
attend.

Foscue (I think his dad was stationed/employed in the Canal Zone when
he entered) will forever be remembered by those in Section 12,
Reichel's Raiders, for sending Pinapple Neal's girlfriend an obscene,
profane and derogatory letter which resulted in several memorable or
forgettable days of continuous swabs out. The irony was Foscue had
submitted his resignation letter and was exempt from the physical
activities.

1/23/06 - Submitted by Greg

Charles (Chuck) Nagel - After swab year, Chuck left CGA
and went back home near Denver CO. On an Idler's trip in November of
'69 or early winter of '70, we flew to Southern CA via Coast Guard
Air, a C-130, for a week long tour to give concerts at the Navy League
Annual Convention in Orange County, at Disneyland, and on a TV program
or two. On the way, the plane had mechanical difficulties that forced
us to land in Denver. We stayed the night there. Barry Oliver and I
called Chuck and he hooked up with us at the motel we were staying and
partied with us. A good time was had by all. Somebody in the Navy
League with bucks, swung for the cost of a commercial plane ride to
Orange County. Who knows what happened to the C-130!!!. I remember we
were traveling in uniform, and we gave a mini concert to those on the
commercial plane and they loved it. Of course with the engine noise
and pressure problems in the cabin, it was very hard to keep on key,
but then nobody on the plane could really hear how bad or good we were
anyway. Not sure what happened to Chuck.
- Jim Trimble & Jay

I have tracked down Jim Trimble who was my roommate
for the first make of swab year along with Jay Miller. He is a manager
for AEP a power company and lives in Longview, Texas. Please add his
name to the list.
- Greg Goodwin
- 1/23/06 - Submitted by Bob

Good morning and Happy New Year. A name that I
don't see on the list was Greg Goodwin who was from Texas and lived
with me first semester of swab year. I'm pretty sure that he left,
maybe even before the end of the first semester and was headed to
Tulane for pre-med.
- Randy Tucker
- 1/23/06 - Submitted by Rich
Buckingham
Wow! Talk about a blast from the past! On and off
for years I have tried to remember the name of my first
"wife" at the factory. He didn't even last a month -- he was
gone by the middle of July 68. But even so, I had some poignant
memories of what we had endured together in that short time. So a took
a few moments to peruse the list to see if his name might jump out at
me... And there he was: Randy ("Randal C.") Tucker ! Thanks
guys. Also, for your info, Jim ("Spider") Specht was (and
probably still is) a school teacher in Oregon, and married to Marta
(also a teacher). If I can dig up a phone # and e-mail I will send it
along. You may recall that he was a bit of a wrestling standout during
his two years at CGA. He left in early June of 1970, right after he
found out that his hometown Selective Service Board was going to count
his almost two years at CGA as totally satisfying his military
obligation! So he didn't have to worry about the draft at that point.
He was a free spirit if ever there was one! We kept in touch on &
off over the years. But I lost touch with him about 8 or 9 years
ago.

OK. I took Tiger's challenge because my
first wife in B-CO, Barry Oliver, should have been on the list but was
not. Barry Oliver was my first Bravo CO wife. I believe Barry
left prior to finishing 3rd class year. Last I saw Barry was at an
Idler's reunion in 1998. He lived near Boston, was married, had a
couple children, and worked as a communications engineer.
So I went back into the 69 yearbook and looked up the Class of 72
in Bravo and found some others.
Those who graduated:
Gary Swan, Rich Withers, Ed Thompson, Bobby
Wells, Frank Sambor, Steve Ziomek
Bruce McCurdy, Jim Norton, Kip Lawrence, John
Malmrose, Tom Meisenzahl, Bob Hallock
Chico Morales, Gary Heil, Greg Johnson, Ben
Abiles, John Giglio, Bobby Brooks,
Woody Collins Butch Aurich, Marty Eager, Art
Corstick, Pete Dolan, Gary Frago,
Joe Blanchard, and Mel Demmitt
Those who did not graduate (only two were on the web page list):
Robert or Rich Peterson (on the list)
C. Burris (on the list)

My wife & I broke out the '72 yearbook last
night & went through the below list vs. the group of on-site,
soon-to-be-classmates, who helped so many of us get through Swab
Summer way back in 1968. I seem to remember that there were ten, but
we could only come up w/ nine names, which are:
James
Alderson Greg
Lapp Terry
Newell Thomas
Parr Danny SanRomani
Michael Shidle
William Turek Robert
Vail Woodrow
Vaughn
Maybe one of that illustrious group can fill-in my
memory whether the above list is correct. Boy, lots of
memories........
- Gary McCaffrey
- 1/24/06 - Submitted by Jim
McCarthy
Also,
what about Gary McCaffrey who reverted into out class during his 2/c
year (I think it was then) due the CGA's strict adherence to
2.00000000000000000 GPA and after making up for his failed classes, he
tried (but again..my memory fails me... DAM...need more Ginkgo-60mg
...maybe 100 mgs or more is needed in my case ...LOL) ... to get back
into his class but that was a no-go ...so he graduated in out class.
- Robert Schooling
- 1/24/06 - Submitted by Carl
Smith
I
believe the missing name is Robert Schooling known as Rags. He hurt
his back and was on medical leave for months. He was from the
Sacramento area, which is why I remembered him.
Brian Schooling
- 1/24/06 - Submitted by Tony
Stimatz
Brian
Schooling comes to mind. I believe that was the name of our "reverter"
coxswain for the infamous lime raid on the Odd Fellows Home. In dark
of night before the first home football game we borrowed a monomoy and
a few bags of lime and rowed across the river to leave a giant 72 in
the grass on the hill. On our way back the fog set in and Brian said
not to worry, that he would keep his face pointed in the right
direction to get us back across to CGA. (The first heads up display?)
Fortunately, we made land fall at Jacob's Rock where there ensued a
ten minute "who goes there" exchange with people on shore
until we determined that we were all Swabs on a mission. It was a
great sight so see our class number in white for some time and then to
see it come out in dark green against the other grass in the spring.
Hope this helps jog a memory.
- John Boggs
- 1/24/06 - Submitted by John
Boggs
Not
sure but I think I might be the oldest in the class - Melnick might be
a player but he has been into space and has probably - if Al was
correct - become younger - think I saw him in bracers at the reunion
so he is about 14 or so - Butler was also ancient - but he is a lawyer
so will argue..... so who knows ............. I have these words as an
old fart.....
It is absolutely the "'72 way" how the
Class is going about rounding up those who left early. I think about
the 30+ years I spent wondering what my "wives" were up to
and if Hugh Grant was still taking guys to gay bars and if Pat
Stillman remembers the Nixon inauguration weekend - we lived through
it Pat. I refused to make contact thinking I would not be accepted and
then I said to me self...... what the hell........ and then the 30th
reunion and I have been kicking myself since cause I didn't do it
earlier. I know our classmates are having the same great thoughts and
recalling those same indelible memories that we experienced.
They are realizing they are members of the Class of
'72 and I don't give a shit if they left Swab summer or after X years
- they are Classmates. Since I reunited, events have had a profound
impact on how I will approach the coming years. I have a load of
friends in the Class of '72 and I hope those classmates we run down
will feel the same. It matters not that we have not seen each other
for many years..... the bond is there. I intend to be at future
reunions and it would be fitting if others who left early would do the
same. My sincere thanks to Mark Noll and Tiger for pressing on with
this. You guys are Sierra Hotel as is .....the Class of '72.

You
(John Boggs) may be right about being the oldest but I'm not sure. My
first "wife" in Section 10 who resigned just a few weeks
into swab summer was Don Porth and he was an enlisted Coastie who got
into the Academy. I don't know how old he was, just that he seemed
older than the rest of us. Maybe Chuck, our super-sleuth, can track
down birthdates to go along with the names.

the original question from Ben - Another name to add to the reverters
is Paul Duddy. You might not remember but I broke my leg swab summer
wrestling Coach Eldridge, anyway Paul wanted to go on a little
unauthorized libo and convinced me to lie in his bed with my head
covered so when rack check was done (on him), he was "accounted
for"! That must have been where I learned my
"liberties" at cga. Nice hearing from all you guys! You are
all so old!!!! Dang, where has the time gone. I will toast all of you
though, my wife, Cheri and I are down in Puerto Vallarta on vacation.

Going back to an old topic:
I have two names to add to the list. Jerry Kosinski and Richard Epps.
My friend Susan Coleman (use to be Susan Couchon when we were cadets) sent me some info on Jerry. She dated Richard Epps, then Barry Oliver, then Jerry
Kosinski, all who ended up leaving the Academy early. After Jerry, I stopped fixing her up with classmates. I don't know how many 72's have children who went to the Academy, but I never could convince any of my four sons to go there. I just got news that Susan's only son got an appointment to the Academy. I guess that's as close as I'll ever get to having an offspring at

Epps, wow haven't thought of him in awhile.
Paul Barger (nicknamed Garçon by Warpo Bergman) and I
roomed with Dick Swab Year. He would sleep everywhere, even on his
feet at the back of the classroom. He also smoked like a chimney. They
finally sent him to Hospital for observation for 48 hours. He slept
the whole time then came back to our room and slept some more. That
was a serious stress reaction.

Ah,
good old Echo Company swab year. Epps & I reported around to
various members of '70 almost every Saturday, Rodino & Spackman
were definitely my favorites. I have some pictures somewhere of
the afternoon we spent bringing everything in our rooms out into
the passageway while wearing one of every clothing item we owned.

Hello Mark -
I stop by the class of 72 web site from time to time.
I resigned in September of 1969. I have nothing but fond
memories of my time at USCGA. I worked my way through college after
leaving and earned a graduate degree as well. I have been married for
28 years and have 2 grown daughters - one who is an English Professor
and another who is studying nursing. I am a senior manager with the
Defense Contract Management Agency and I am also drawing a little NY
State Teachers pension.
Enough bio stuff. I was very sorry to hear about Bill
Fels who I roomed with for most of my first year. He was a terrific
fellow.
If you don't mind, please include my email address on the
site Jack.Boyd@dcma.mil
I wasn't smart enough to acquire photos while at the
Academy. I have always wanted to get my hands on some pics that I am
in from the Escanaba cruise to the Mediterranean in 1969. Perhaps we
could post this request at your site. - Kindest regards, Jack Boyd

OK, I
couldn't hold back anymore. The guy I remember who left early
was Steve Switala. I think it was when we came back from Eagle
cruise swab summer. I was in Reichl's Raiders, Section 12, along
with Tommy Yearout and the other latecomers, guys with feet too big,
guys who couldn't swim; you know the cream of the crop !!!!!
Anyway, we came up to the 4th deck, D wing and there was
this poor guy, about 6 feet 3, covered in sweat, from Section 11.
We really thought he was going to die and I think he did too. We
nicknamed him Sweatala because he was always in trouble (guess some of
that rubbed off through proximity) and suddenly he was gone.
Now, the reason I can't forget his name is somehow I ended up with a
pair of his white bellbottoms with his name properly stenciled on the
waistband. Much to Donna's chagrin, I have kept those whites all
this time. He seemed like a good guy. Probably a CEO by
now. 7/26/18 - Sunmitted by

Steve was my wife in Henderson's Section 11 all Swab Summer. He sweat
so much because he was trying so hard to keep me from screwing up
every frigging moment...more than once I was ordered to bring
everything in my room to some 2/c "AND bring your wife and his gear,
too." Poor Steve. He stayed until the end of Swab Summer to prove to
himself and everybody else you couldn't break him with hazing, but was
convinced the "rigors" of cadet life were a lot of unnecessary bull.

nickname for him was Sweat-ala, but we only saw him up near Section 12
for a few days at the end of the summer, then he split.

I too can’t resist the urge to talk about one of our classmates who decided to depart the zoo early…Rich Davidson, my 72 summer swab wife, or he might have been my wife during first make…details lol . Anyway, Rich was a California boy (Riverside in SoCal), and he struggled to keep up with the extra curricular activities (i.e., butts-muzzles and zulu), but gave it his all and was a trooper. He received a letter from his high school girl friend announcing her pregnancy, and he went wild (a whole another story there). Rich was gone within the week, and I missed the big lug. We exchanged letters, and at one point he said his draft board had given him notice and that he was heading to Canada. I never heard from him again, until, get
this, he looked me up when I was a LT in old D11 in Long Beach circa 1979/80. His ex-wife called me and said that Rich would be in town for a few days and that he wanted to get together. I was flabbergasted, and agreed. Rich and his ex-wife came over to my house for dinner, and Rich said he was down from Canada to visit his kid, whom his ex-wife was raising. He would sneak across the border once a year or so to see his family. Rich had become a Canadian citizen, and was living and raising a family in Victoria, BC, where he was a radio disk jockey. He wanted to hear all about the CG, and we
talked about how classmates were doing (I told him Lardass was still a loser, etc). He said he would stay in touch, but I never heard from him again. I always wondered if he accepted the draft dodger amnesty offered later…if anyone has any updates on Rich, please sing out.

Tom's
comments about Ed Clark brought me back to swab year. I
believe Ed was on the rifle team. I sat with him at a meal
at least once. I recall he ate A-1 Steak sauce with
everything...even on ice cream. It may not have been his
favorite sauce, but I guess as a swab, you'd do a lot of things
for carry on once in a while.
I went home with Ed to Florida during one break.
Glad to hear he's in this state. I'll have to try and find
him. - Ben

I
remember Greg Wolf. He was my first roommate Swab Summer. He left
fairly early, so I did not get to know him well, but he made a very
positive impression on me. He was a gentleman. I remember when we were
first paired up, I thought to myself that if he could make it, I could
make it. Then he quit, and I wasn't so sure if I could make it any
more. (I also remember Mappa because he fell asleep so often in summer
academic classes. He had a lot of white chalk eraser marks on his
blues.) (Then there was the dude I loaned $20 to only to learn he left
the Academy the next day.)

Does
anyone remember Brad Bullington ??? Well, I do upon occasion. We
became friends during my 4/c year Guest Visits down to "A"
Company reporting to a 2/c Mike Neal aka the "Pineapple".
I remember the 4/c in "A" Company showing a
"lot of compassion" for any classmate who "suffered the
misfortune" of passing through their company area. Unusually
"hostile territory" as best I remember.
Brad, was a tall kid, with some difficulty focusing his
eyes (wore glasses) and always seemed to be "squinting".
Being from SoCAL, I took him home a few times to PA during our 4th and
3rd class years. We would take the train into NY City for
"amusement" and drink (18 years old), was legal there.
The Guy was "SMART". I can remember him,
"never cracking a book" until the night before an exam.
Turning in his bluebook 20 minutes early and "Aceing" the
damn tests.
I discovered later that he had a "photographic
type memory".
He left during 2nd class summer. I looked him up after
graduation while stationed in Long Beach. He married a local gal,
whose parents had a place in Newport Beach and was working for FLUOR
as a Piping Design Engineer. He graduated from UCLA as a Chenical
Engineer. I sort of lost track of him once I left for Ann Arbor and U

there is the unverified legend of the guy who pulled up in a muscle

informed that he couldn't have a car at the Academy, whereupon this
wise soul got back in his car and drove away.

to: John Larned - I'm guessing that all postings to the class
website go through you, so here's one for the list:
Wanted to thank the class for its warm welcome back for a former
member who didn't quite make it to graduation. It was great to see
that familiar faces were still at least vaguely familiar 38 years
later. Some of you have changed a little.
How did I know Hathaway (who hasn't) would be the first member of the
class to sport an earring?
I was thoroughly impressed with the general level of success of CGA
72's members, both in the Guard (lotta stripes represented there;
pretty scary to a guy who always got nervous around that much brass)
and beyond. Especially considering that the last time I saw many of
you, you were working very hard at being total screw-ups. You know who
you are (and I naturally count myself in that group).
Thanks to the committee for a delightful weekend, and for the Class of
'72 baseball cap and jacket. I feel as if I'm wearing them under at
least slightly false pretenses, but they should come in handy if I'm
ever boarded for a "courtesy" inspection by the local
Coasties. (Along with the 1968 CGM I received on arrival at the
academy, which I still use when I forget how to start a splice).
If any of you find yourselves on Florida's Gulf Coast, please holler.
You have a place to stay in Fort Walton Beach. Our e-mail is wilcor@aol.com;
telephones are xxx-xxx-xxxx (home) and xxx-xxx-xxxx (my cell). - Will

all these years I stumbled on the web site for the Class of ’72. I
left at the end of Swab Year with a medical discharge and moved back

a degree in Civil Engineering. Since graduation I have been in the oil
refining business in Illinois and Wyoming. At present I am in charge
of field construction for major projects for Frontier Refining in
Cheyenne, WY. I have been married for 37 years with 4 children and 11

this will help fill out a small amount of information on a great site.

Steve Conkling
- 7/18/18 - submitted by Norm Henslee - Steve Conkling was in
Charlie company swab year and had the awesome task of being Balunis'
wake up orderly. Steve hailed from Midland, TX and scored a
perfect 1600 on his SATs. So what a surprise that he had to go
before the Academic board in December who threw him out after one
semester at CGA. Not to be deterred, Steve applied for and was
accepted into the Class of '73. So sure enough when we returned
from summer cruise as 3rd classmen, their was my good buddy, Steve, a
SWAB again. I remember telling him to brace up and he would tell
me to F^^^ off! Alas, Steve flunked out again, this time at the
end of SWAB year. He was a great guy with a terrific sense of humor.
His mom would send him care packages with the best chocolate bundt
cakes I have ever tasted. Last time I spoke with Steve, he was
in Colorado delivering the mail and none the worse for having missed
out on a CG career.
